On May 22, 2023, an AI-generated image of smoke near the Pentagon went viral, briefly sending markets into turmoil. Verified users on X posted the image, with one falsely claiming affiliation with Bloomberg News. This misinformation triggered a brief disturbance, even catching the attention of international media outlets.

The post falsely claimed there was a “Large explosion near the Pentagon complex in Washington DC.” X quickly suspended the account, but not before the misinformation spread. RT, a Russian government-backed media company formerly known as Russia Today, picked up the information believing it was real and tweeted: “Reports of an explosion near the Pentagon in Washington DC.” RT quickly deleted the post after verifying the report was false.
The image spread rapidly across social media, triggering a market reaction just after the U.S. stock exchange opened. The S&P 500 briefly fell 0.3%, the Dow dropped 80 points, and investors rushed to safe-haven assets like gold and Treasury bonds, all before the hoax was debunked.
Following the image's rapid dissemination, the Arlington County Fire Department tweeted: “@PFPAOfficial and the ACFD are aware of a social media report circulating online about an explosion near the Pentagon. There is NO explosion or incident taking place at or near the Pentagon reservation, and there is no immediate danger or hazards to the public.”
Before officials confirmed the image was fake, social media users speculated that it was AI-generated. Hany Farid, a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, specializing in digital forensics, told CNN he found inconsistencies in the image. He noted, “This image shows typical signs of being AI-synthesized: there are structural mistakes on the building and fence that you would not see if, for example, someone added smoke to an existing photo.”
While this hoax was debunked quickly, it exposed a larger problem: AI-generated misinformation is becoming harder to detect, and next time, the consequences could be far worse.
